Why telcos are ideally positioned to scale Indonesian startups

Jakarta’s three biggest telco companies are XL Axiata, Indosat, and Telkom Indonesia. Quarter after quarter, all three firms are witnessing increased mobile data usage by their customers, and all three are actively involved in Indonesia’s tech startup scene.

Indosat CEO Alexander Rusli tells Tech in Asia that to create the right exit environment, telco leaders must work today to change the thinking of the nation’s more conservative investors. Rusli and Indosat seem to be leading by example, as back in May the telco launched a US$50 million venture capital fund for Jakarta’s startups, alongside Japanese conglomerate SoftBank as its partner. Indosat also powers Jakarta’s Ideabox accelerator for early-stage tech ventures in Indonesia.

In August, Telkom Indonesia announced it would invest US$200 million into the archipelago’s tech startups. President director Arief Yahya calls the initiative a corporate venture capital fund focusing on local and US startups, and is confident that it will be the largest of its kind coming out of Indonesia. Telkom also jointly runs the capital’s Indigo Fenoxincubator.

Moto X Developer Edition (2013) now available for only $229!

Moto X Developer Edition (2013) now available for only $229!

Motorola’s original Moto X Developer Edition was a stunning device when it first launched, and continues to be a very capable phone. Interested in the older-generation Moto X? You can now get it for a mere $229 from eBay right now.

Opinion: That is over a 50% discount over the $500 retail pricing, so don’t let this chance slip out. There’s a limited quantity and almost 900 units have been sold, so hurry up if you want to cash in on this deal.

Google Keep now supports sharing lists and notes

Google Keep now supports sharing lists and notes

Sharing your Google Keep notes and lists used to mean having to use the same Google account. That messy set-up is no longer necessary. The Search Giant has added sharing capabilities to Google Keep.

This means users can now simply share their to-do lists and grocery shopping lists after creating them. Groups can then collaborate and get things done together without a single issue. Neat, right?

Opinion: I, for one, am glad to see this new feature showing up. It will be very helpful for work, as well as personal tasks.

Snapchat now let’s you send money to your friends

Snapchat now let’s you send money to your friends

Today Snapchat is entering a whole new market – mobile payments. The messaging service has announced a new feature for sending money to your friends. They cal it Snapcash, and it is powered by popular mobile payments company Square.

Once you set up your debit card information, you can easily send money to your friends by accessing the messaging section and typing in the dollar sign ($) along with the quantity you want to send. It’s only available for USA Snapchat users who are 18 and have a debit card.

Opinion: This seems a bit odd, to say the least. I also wonder how it will go if you are simply taking toy our friend about money. If I tell a friend “My car costed $15,000″, will it send them that money?
